It's December and the wood stove is out of commission, the heater doesn't work, and it's Saturday night. Pretty cold until the small space heater warmed our kitchen. Luckily, the temperature outside was in the mid-forties.

Sunday: The wood stove (an Earth Stove) is now working because I figured out how to use it. We're warm in all the rooms except the lower level (TV room). Blankets on for watching the tube.

Tuesday: Now we're listening to heating company salesmen give us their spiel and bids. One yesterday, one today, two tomorrow. The electric furnace was 31 years old so it was about time for its demise. We might also put in a new heat pump. We'll see what the bids are. (The bid from yesterday is not fit for day time blogs.)

Wednesday: We went with a new heater and heat pump from Jacobs Heating & Air Conditioning. Best by far. Photos to follow after installation on Saturday. Wood stove still working.

Saturday: New Electric Furnace and Heat pump going in as we type. Major, Major, Major, project! Catch-22: You spend the money to put in a new heating/cooling system and you can no longer afford to live in the house. (Notice the word play?)

Monday: Heat pump installed today plus some corrections to Saturday's work and some minor problems with the heat pump. It didn't work. Our technician, after much looking and checking and calling the office and checking again, finally found the problem: the fuse, the one that came with the heat pump, supposedly new, didn't work. The technician changed the fuse and the heat pump works great. Not all done yet, however. Thursday the technician and an electrician will come out to do more technician work and electrical work and finally be done with the installation. (Photos to follow, really!)

Old Heat Pump

New Heat Pump

Friday, Christmas Eve: All in as of yesterday. A long ordeal but definitely worth it. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and imagination exist. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no heaven. No place that one could look to for total happiness, total satisfaction in a life well lived. Virgina there was a movie awhile ago called "Black Robe" in which a Jesuit Priest is told by a young Frenchman that the Algonquin Indians have an afterworld. "They believe that in the forest at night the dead can see. The souls of men hunt the souls of animals." The Jesuit Priest asks "Is that what they told you? It is childish." And the young Frenchman replies, "Is it harder to believe in than Paradise where we all sit on clouds?"

Virginia, nobody sees heaven until they're there. And once you're there you know it as sure as life itself. It may be your first ride on a bicycle. Or your first kiss. Or maybe it's something you won't ever experience but something that you always anticipate. Something in your mind that you imagine. That's why your imagination is so important, Virginia.

For me, Heaven can be an emotion, a feeling, or an experience. Just last night, while preparing dinner, I walked out to the garden next to our barn where the horses were munching their evening meal, and picked some fresh Swiss Chard. A whole shopping bag full of fresh Swiss Chard. I brought the bag into the house and cleaned each leaf, put them in a pot, and steamed them. Virginia, when my wife and I ate that fresh steamed Swiss Chard, that was Heaven!

No Heaven! Thank goodness there's a heaven. And it will be there forever. A thousand years from now, Virgina, nay, ten times ten thousand years form now there will be a heaven, whether it's an actual experience, a location - such as a forest, or clouds, or anything your mind can imagine heaven to be, it will be there.

Brian M. I thought, my goodness, this is Redland. And the soil is a dense, red CLAY!

That's why my French Tarragon, Basil, Butternut Squash, and half-a-dozen other plants, even though I spent a fortune to amend the soil, withered up and died. So I researched and talked to neighbors and gardeners at local nurseries and found out what to do with clay soil:

Add pumice, 1/4" minus rock, and sand to the compost. The organic material will rot and the clay will come back. BUT the inorganic material stays and allows the soil to breathe. Long live my French Tarragon.

Brian M. These shelters had to be large enough, 12' X 36', and strong enough to withstand the bumps and nudges of horses that weighed over a thousand pounds each. The roof needed to withstand wind gusts of up to seventy miles an hour.

Vicki and I started the first one in early September 2009. The roof on the shelter where Vicki boarded her horses had a two-twelve pitch, so that was the pitch for the roof on our shelters. The design was easy, I've done that before to build sets for the stage. And carpenter work is my meditation: I love the smell of green lumber, the tink, tink of a twenty-two ounce hammer against the head of a sixteen penny nail, and the smooth cut from a worm-drive circular saw. Each morning on my walk to the shelter location in the chill of autumn my blood pressure dropped and nothing mattered but the stacks of lumber and metal roofing on the ground.

Vicki took to the construction work like she was grooming one of her horses and in early October when we lifted the final sheet of galvanized roofing off the ground, we discovered a community of mice. There were intricate tunnels of dried grass that curled into a maze of tiny mice home tufts. The tunnels pulsed with mice movement as the inch-long rodents scurried throughout their disoriented neighborhood. However, since we only saw the mice at tunnel intersections we soon tired of them and returned to finish the shelter. Vicki's three mares arrived at our ranch on October 15th.

Just last week, in the warmth of spring, when Vicki lifted the trough in that same paddock to pour out the old water, she noticed a small individual tuft of dried grass on the ground. The tuft looked empty but because the trough is moved and cleaned and filled with fresh water every other day she didn't want mice to build their home in a danger zone. With delicate hands she took the tiny tuft to the garbage can and, just before depositing it, turned it over to examine its structure. Five mice the size of a dime dropped to the driveway and wiggled their pink bodies in a confused fervor. Vicki screamed. She bent down and picked up each mouse and slid it back into the dried grass then rushed with outstretched arms to the paddock where she placed it back under the trough.

Vicki came into my office and sputtered out the story between sniffles and sobs and shivers before she collapsed into a chair convinced the five baby mice would die. My explanation on the survival instincts of rodents did not help. However, the next time she lifted that water trough to empty it, mother mouse darted out of the grass tuft and three mice, now the size of a quarter, ran around in circles. Vicki jumped for joy.

Brian M.
